Spiritual Eating Disorder

Do you ever read the bible  and you finally just get it?

I feel like I don’t have this happen as much as I would like. But today while I was writing in my journal and reading I “got” something! I had recently heard a man talk about Billy Graham and how he thought of the bible as spiritual food and how he never wanted to miss a meal! When I heard this I was like, “whoa, that is so true” and I was convicted. I got it then but I really got it today.

I feel like I have a spiritual eating disorder. Most days, if not all, I only spiritually eat once and  if I only spiritually eat once then I don’t have enough energy to pour out into others, because I am hungry myself!  But we could also eat a lot and get spiritually fat and this isn’t necessarily a good thing! When we eat a lot in real life, in order to not get fat we have to go to the gym and exercise. So if we are getting all of our spiritual meals, we should be pouring into others, which will keep us spiritually healthy!

It is a constant inflow so that we can overflow into others as my youth pastor Darin says.

So lettuce eat, but don’t forget to exercise!

The Devo | Commentary

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.

“Wow, this seems so intense and scary. If I was one of the 12 disciples I would have been scared to death. You know when you go somewhere and I looks like fun but you really don’t know what you have gotten into?! Like at camp, the ropes course always got to me. I did it but part of me was like why did I sign up for this. I bet that’s how the disciples felt after hearing these words from Christ.”

When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

“This is a little more comforting to be reassured that your not alone in this. Jesus got cho back”

Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

“Hope. Keep pressing on”

When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.

“It’s amazing how many people call themselves Christian but their lives look nothing like Christ. -multiply movement.”

If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:16-25, 28 ESV)

I want to be his disciple, to have no fear and really truly follow Him with my life! Where ever He leads me I will follow with my whole heart! If I had to give everything up for the sake of Christ and His glory I would.

James 1:2-6

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. ” James 1:2-4

We all face trials and we all have troubles! I know personally I have been going through plenty of struggles with school, family, friends, job, and booyyyys! Ones that I have never really faced before. They are teaching me a lot about myself and a lot about life.

The first 4 words of this passage say “consider it pure joy”. What is pure joy? Do you have joy? When I hear the word “pure” it makes me think of something natural, clean and real. Pure joy is something that is overflowing and cant be contained by anything else. When we face trials we are supposed be joyful in them! You might be thinking, but when others have trials they are always sad and everything is wrong. But that is how the world reacts to trials! We are called to be Set-apartfrom the world in our attitude! God want us to realize the we are going to be made strong by the trials we face.

“Let perseverance finish its work in you so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking ANYTHING!”
When you let perseverance build you up and you face your trials with the armor of God, you will be made complete! You wont be in need of anything else! Our God wants to see you grow and become mature in your faith! We get to choose our attitude towards our trials because God isn’t going to force us to change. But it is His desire to draw nearer to Him and to let Him work in us during our trials.

I challenge you to face your trials with overflowing joy and a positive attitude, believing that through trials, your faith will be made stronger and that you will draw nearer to our graceous Lord!
